Arrival of the Waka
Arrival of Te Hau ō Matariki into Porirua Harbour.
The new Ngati Toa Waka, Te Hau ō Matariki, arrived into Porirua Harbour on 23 November after a 2 week journey down from Whangarei. There was a huge turnout on the day for the arrival ceremony with a large fleet of Waka Ama and other vessels escorting her in. The Waka is now permanently berthed in Mana Marina. If you would like to know more feel free to contact the Marine Operations Advisor, Natania, at natania.katene@ngatitoa.iwi.nz
Marina Barge Operations
The crew aboard ‘Grey Ghost’ have spent the last couple of months shifting sand from the Marina entrance and sleeving piles on A and B piers. We are very pleased with the progress that has been made on both projects, and Grey Ghost hasn’t missed a beat. We have another couple of weeks of operation before we pause for Christmas.
Kiwirail maintenance and public carpark closure
Kiwirail have maintenance planned for the railway section between the Mana station and the Paremata bridges. They will be operating from 26 December to 12 January. The Marina carpark will be unaffected, but the public carpark to the east will be out of action and heavy trucks and machinery will be coming and going. Please see below for more detail.
Carpark that will be out of action
GOFuel Christmas promotion
GOFuel are running their Christmas Fuel promotion again! Spend $500.00 or more on fuel in December or January using your GOFuel or Mobil card and you will automatically go into the draw to win $500.00 of fuel.
Emergency Airhorns
After concerns were raised about the compressed gas airhorns that were mentioned in last months newsletter potentially not working when needed, we have replaced them with manual airhorns. These red horns can be found in the safety bags attached to each pier’s bridge. All you need to do to operate them is blow (we tested them and they are very loud).
Biosecurity inspections
The biosecurity inspections that were conducted at the end of last month by Boffa Miskell in co-ordination with the GWRC biosecurity team went swimmingly! No new species on the “hit-list” were found within the Marina, and no vessels have been ordered to be removed from the water. Don’t forget to have a read of the Top Of The South biosecurity rules if you are planning to head across the Strait this summer - https://www.marinebiosecurity.co.nz/resources
